Surrey Sighthound Walking Group

Surrey Sighthound Walking Group (SSWG) usually meets for organised group walks on the second and fourth Sundays of the month.

The group was founded on 26 February 2017 with its first outing at Mogador, where Rena and I had enjoyed our first Great Global Greyhound Walk the previous summer – SSWG has since taken on organising the annual GGGW in aid of Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare. But our history pre-dates 2017. It started in April 2016, when I met Rena.

What started out as a handful of people has grown over the past five years to a Facebook community of over 1,400 sighthound slaves, and our walks, which take us all over the county, have been attended by up to 60 dogs at a time (although usually in the 20s).

We fundraise for Celia Cross Greyhound Trust and Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare at every walk, and as of April 2023, our fundraising is over £14,000.

SSWG walks are open to all sighthounds regardless of background. We have greyhounds, lurchers, whippets, even a couple of tiny iggies are in the gang. We have chilled hounds, elegant ladies and gents, bonkers dogs and reactive, noisy ones too. Nobody bats an eyelid. We are often joined by kennel hounds from WGW and Celia Cross – a nice day out for them and vital socialising experience to help them on their rehoming journeys.
